Some Traffic Characteristics of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Network

Abstract(in English) Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing software appeared for the last two or three years. A software named as Napster had been explosively used from the beginning of the appearance and caused the copyright problems on music file exchanges. At the same time, progress of digital technologies, density growth of LSI, and capacity expansion of optical fiber have been advancing. By virtue of the advancement of technologies, the speed of access channel has been becoming higher and higher, and always-on connection environments have been available with very cheap price. Such environments enable the broader use of P2P file-sharing. P2P traffic volume in the network is increasing enormously, and the portion of P2P traffic occupies over a half of the total traffic in many of networks. This paper surveys characteristics of P2P traffic based on many recent literatures. We focused on some measurements such as traffic ratio of the each application, file size, signaling traffic volume and throughput behavior. Although P2P technology is extremely excellent technology under sufficient large network resources environments, however we should control P2P traffic to maintain appropriate communication quality for the users. The traffic control technologies have important role in the future and we also slightly discuss them.
