Lossless Video Coding Using Variable Block-Size MC and 3D Prediction

Abstract(in English) This paper proposes an efficient lossless video coding scheme. The scheme utilizes a novel block-adaptive 3D prediction method in which a video signal at each pel is predicted based on both the current and previous frames. To exploit temporal correlations effectively, a quadtree-based variable block-size motion compensation (MC) technique is carried out prior to the 3D prediction. The resulting prediction errors are encoded using a kind of context-adaptive arithmetic coding. Coding parameters such as prediction coefficients, motion vectors and block-size for MC are iteratively optimized for each frame so that a coding rate of the prediction errors can have a minimum, and their optimized values are encoded as side-information. In order to find better trade-off between the amount of coding bits for the prediction errors and that for the above side-information, several combinations of the number of predictors and prediction order are tested for some GIF-sized sequences. As a result, it turns out that the proposed scheme can attain 20-56% lower coding rates than a JPEG-LS-based intra-frame coding scheme.
