| Abstract(in English) | This paper addresses both commercial and technical issues that current mobile satellite services (MSS) encounter as well as those future MSS need to tackle to meet future customer demands and requirements. Due to proliferation of terrestrial mobile services, e.g., 2G and 3G in particular, the customers acknowledge the value of broadband mobile services, and wish to enjoy the same level of services in any environments while on the move. Those environments may include, but not be limited to, land, maritime and aeronautical environments. To ride the wave of the need of broadband mobile services in any environments, therefore, MSS should be poised to make broadband mobile services available with reasonable cost and affordable QoS that are as good (competitive?) as terrestrial counterparts, and to deliver them on time. MSS should not miss out on this opportunity. In this paper, at the inception, the review of an avenue MSS is taking to come up with the current level of services is made with focusing major technical parameters and services being offered to various different segments. Through this review, the reader will learn the strength and weakness of the present MSS. Then, this paper touches upon five major issues and corresponding solutions to the extend conceivable all of which would be prerequisites for making a broadband MSS as a dream come true; 1)regulations, 2)efficient utilization of power and radio spectrum, 3)mobile terminals, 4)services and networks, and 5)space segment. |
