Abstract(in English) Multi-rate FDMA is one of the promising access methods for the return link of future mobile satellite system. In this system, dynamic symbol rate assignment becomes the key technology for the high efficient use of frequency band and provision of services with QOS control. Therefore, the technique how to alternate the symbol rate without discontinuity of channel is focused in the paper. Conventional approaches have two drawbacks. One is the transient BER degradation due to the asynchronous symbol rate switching between transmitter and receiver. The other is the power-hunger to achieve large variable range of symbol rate. A new seamless symbol rate alternation modem satisfying those two requirements is proposed in this paper. In the new modem, as the symbol rate is alternated synchronously between the transmitter and the receiver, no BER degradation occurs in changing the symbol rate. In addition, by adapting bandwidth of interpolation filter and the rate of decimation according to the symbol rate, this modem is capable of operating at the low clock speed compared to the conventional variable symbol rate modems. We confirmed its fundamental performance via computer simulations. Simulated results show that the proposed modem functions to change symbol rate without degrading BER performance.
