| Abstract(in English) | It was the year of 1985 that the satellite telecommunication business in Japan was first approved when the telecommunication business was deregulated, and the private provider of satellite telecommunication business by JCSAT and SCC actually started the service in 1990. At the beginning, the satellite telecommunication business in Japan was permitted only fixed satellite service (FSS), however, the communication satellites are now widely used for the broadcast service, the international service, and also the mobile service as a result of the development of the application introducing new technology. Seeing the whole telecommunication business in Japan, in spite of small and being niche of the satellite service, it is recognized by people as popular to our life. As concrete application, pre-school network, used-car auction system, the School Internet, etc. are introduced. Nowadays the satellite telecommunication business in Japan is forced the strong competition with terrestrial broadband such as FTTH, ADSL and CATV internet. The cost of the satellite itself doesn't become inexpensive dramatically, so that the satellite telecommunication business will shift mainly to direct broadcasting by satellite (DTH) and mobile services, as long as there is no technical innovation which causes breakthrough like wavelength-division multiplexing(WDM) technology of an optical fiber. Surveying overview of a satellite communication business in Japan, this paper describes the activity of the present satellite provider in Japan and status of their service, and discusses the subject of satellite service in the future. |
