Abstract(in English) Japan has been contributing to the development of satellite communication technologies for more than 20 years because satellite communication is now part of society's fundamental infrastructure. This paper gives an overview of the history of Japan's research and development of satellite communication technologies and briefly describes current research and development projects for the next generation of satellite communication systems, such as the Engineering Test Satellite VIII, the Wideband Inter-Networking Engineering Test & Demonstration Satellite, and the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System.
