Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Future Ka-band broadband satellite communication systems are required to provide economical two-way high-speed data communication services that use small user terminals. It is also required that the beam allocation be adaptable to fit the changing service areas. Therefore the onboard antenna for the satellite communication systems must have a large aperture and a phased array to obtain both high antenna gain and flexible beam formation. Generally a phased-array-fed imaging reflector antenna satisfies such a demand among several antenna configurations. However, even though the number of radiating elements should be as small as possible in onboard antennas, grating lobes are generated if the number of radiating elements used in the antenna are too small. In this paper, we propose a method for reducing the grating lobe level generated when there is small number of radiating elements by changing the distance between the array plane and the center of the subreflector in the imaging reflector antenna configuration. The proposed method was applied to the design of an onboard phased-array-fed imaging reflector type antenna for a Ka-band broadband satellite system. In so doing, it was clarified that the proposed method successfully reduces the grating lobe level in a practical antenna design and consequently is a useful approach towards bringing about two-way high-speed satellite communication services in Japan.
