Luminescence of Visible Light in Silica Glass Films

Abstract(in English) Luminescence of white light in silica films with impurities has been studied. The silica films were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering method. Germanium, titanium and tin were used as the dopant materials. In films with single dopant material, relatively weak visible light luminescence was observed. On the other hand, silica films with simultaneously doped materials of Ge, Ti and Sn show strong white luminescent characteristics. However, thermal treatment above 650℃ was necessary to obtain the luminescence. We examined a new silica film with artificial lattice structure to obtain white light luminescence without thermal treatment process. In this structure, layers of Ge : SiO_2 (germanium doped silica), Ti : SiO_2 and Sn : SiO_2 were periodically stacked. Thickness of each layer was 10-20 nm, and more then 100 layers ware stacked for a film of a few micrometers. Relatively strong white light luminescence was observed in the artificial lattice film without thermal treatment.
