Thermonagnetic Recording in Microfabricated TbFe Alloy Films Using Pulse Current

Abstract(in English) Thermomagnetic recording has been investigated by using pulse current heating in microfabricated TbFe (80 nm) alloy films. The TbFe films were prepared by rf magnetron sputtering and patterned into sizes of 0.5-2.0μm squares by either of a fucused ion beam or a contact mask photolithography. Magnetization reversal was observed by applying a pulse current with a magnetic field of±500 Oe for 0.5-2.0μm squared TbFe elemetns. The current density for the reversal was found to decrease with decreasing size of elements, which was 4.0×10^6,2.5×10^6,1.3×10^6A/cm^2 for 2.0, 1.0, and 0.5μm squared TbFe elements, respectively. Corresponding Joule heating in an unit area is estimated to be 33, 13, 3 pJ/μm^2 for the elements, respectively.
