Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The effects of thermally assisted writing on the recording properties of high coercivity synthetic ferrimagnetic media (SFM) were investigated using a conventional spin stand equipped with an optical head for a commercial magneto-optical drive. The laser light (λ=685nm) was focused through the glass substrate onto the recording layer. The optical spot size was 1.1μm and a commercial magnetic head was with the writer width of ~0.3μm. A DC light pulse was irradiated during writing. The recording properties were measured up to 700kfci as a function of the writing current (Iw) and the laser power (PL). For the medium with Hc=6kOe and Mrt=0.37memu/cm^2, the overwrite performance was dramatically improved with thermal assist using PL=5mW. The signal and SNR measured at 350kfci were maximized by optimizing PL at any Iw between 12mA to 40mA. The signal decay due to thermal erasure seems to be negligible at this PL.
