Frequency and Welding Characteristics of 150 kHz Ultrasonic Plastic Welding Systems

Abstract(in English) The welding characteristics of 150 kHz ultrasonic plastic welding systems were studied. The diameter of the 150 kHz transducer is 20 mm. The vibration system consists of two and four 20-mm-diameter piezo-electric ceramic (PZT) ring, stepped catenoidal horn with a supporting nodal flange. The welding tip is 4.0 mm in diameter and installed in the free edge of the catenoidal horn. Maximum vibration velocities of the welding tips are 3 m/s and 7 m/s (peak-to-zero value) in the cases of the two and four PZT systems. Welding characteristics of polypropyrene sheet specimens are studied using the 150 kHz plastic welding system and also the characteristics are compared with those of 27 kHz to 94 kHz welding systems. Required vibration velocities of these systems become smaller as vibration frequency becomes higher. Required vibration velocity of 150 kHz welding system is one third of that of the 94 kHz system. Temperature rises of welding area are measured using thermo couples of copper-constantan 0.2 mm in diameter. The temperature in welding part rises faster as vibration frequency is higher.
