Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Increasing the sensitivity of transducer arrays in a medical diagnostic system and decreasing mechanical-coupling between the adjacent elements are intrinsic problems. The use of quarter-wave matching layers as impedance transformation has been a standard practice for attaining high conversion efficiency of transducer arrays. The transducer arrays under consideration were conventional ones with two matching layers on piezoelectric elements. The simulations of the transducer arrays indicated that Poisson's ratio of the matching layers gives a great affect on the sensitivity and the mechanical-coupling between the adjacent elements. That is, the characteristics of the arrays are improved, as the Poisson's ratio is smaller. Carbon-epoxy unidirectional composite mixed with tungsten powder and high strength polyethylene fiber-polyurethane rubber allows the realization of the materials with a Poisson's ratio below 0.1, where the materials have an optimum acoustic impedance for the matching layers. From these facts we found that the improvement of the transducer arrays can be expected by adopting the composite materials to the matching layers. Satisfactory results have been obtained in computer simulations of the transducer array model based on the characteristic data of newly proposed composite materials.
