Intermodulation Measurements for High-Temperature Superconducting Thin-Film Filters

Abstract(in English) Intermodulation generated for high-power input signals is an obstacle for transmitter applications of high-temperature superconducting rf filters in base stations for mobile communications. In this report, as a basic study for reduction of the intermodulation, we describe our experimental investigations for effects of various filter parameters on the intermodulation characteristic in thin-film bandpass filters with microstrip configurations, which are favorable for miniaturization and filter structures of large numbers of resonators. The investigated filter parameters are the line width of the resonators, the thickness and properties of the superconducting films, the pass-band width and the pole number. Especially for improvement of the film properties, we use films of NdBa_2Cu_3O_7 (NBCO) grown by an MBE method with a precise composition control and low substrate temperatures during film growth. Until now, we found that IP3 for the filters is effectively enhanced especially by increasing the film thickness and that filters made from MBE-grown NBCO films yield higher IP3 values than filters made from commercially-obtained YBCO films. We also experimentally tested IP3 reduction with decrease in the pass-band width and increase in the number of poles in the filters.
