Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The blind people cannot use visual channel to get information such about written text and surroundings. The idea of the media conversion that changes visual information into auditory one is widely utilised. The question arises is whether these assistive technologies based on just the idea of media conversion works well in a real situation. In this report, we discuss two issues that relate to the question. The first one is the issue of text-to-speech systems that use speech signals. Homophones in a text will cause cognitive stress. We investigate the frequency in use of homophones in a newspaper, and show it is around 3%. The second issue is sound signal, speech and/or nonspeech one, used as auditory information for indoor orientation and mobility (OM). We show certain problems in OM from the viewpoint of getting auditory signals with good accuracy and quality.
