On the Local Poisson Property of Measured IP Traffic

Abstract(in English) Our previous works have presented the scenario that aggregated IP traffic exhibits the Poisson-like characteristic within small time scales. We call the characteristic as the local Poisson property. We have also indicated that the packet loss probability of a finite-buffer queue with the local Poisson input can be estimated by evaluating the finite-buffer queue with the corresponding Poisson input when the buffer size is within a certain range. We refer to the evaluation technique as Poisson approximation. In this paper, we analytically derive the approximate range of the buffer size within which a finite-buffer queue with a local Poisson input can be evaluated by the Poisson approximation. Next, we confirm the applicability of the Poisson approximation to actual IP traffic and the feasibility of the buffer range, by examining the packet loss probability of a finite-buffer queue with the input of measured IP traffic. The results indicate that the Poisson approximation works with certain types of actual IP traffic such as aggregated traffic from many end-users to a core network and aggregated peer-to-peer traffic. They also suggest that the approximate range of buffer size gives us a good indication to judge the applicability of the Poisson approximation.
