IPv6 Network Operation with Auto-configured Tunnel (6to4)

Abstract(in English) 6to4 is a mechanism of IPv6 over IPv4 tunneling. The 6to4 method allows isolated IPv6 sites, which is attached to an IPv4 network which has no native IPv6 support, to communicate with each other without explicit tunnel setup. And the organization which has a connectivity to a world-wide IPv6 network can provide the IPv6 connectivity for isolated IPv6 sites easily by installing 6to4 relay routers. Now there are about ten open 6to4 relay routers anyone can use in the world. But so far there were no open 6to4 relay routers in Japan, so there was a problem that 6to4 users in Japan can not get a good performance of IPv6 communication, for example, RTT (Round Trip Time) is very long. For that reason, we have started the experiment of open 6to4 relay router operation from March 2002 with the support of WIDE Project, to study the 6to4 method and to improve the utility of 6to4 in Japan. In this paper, we introduce our experiment, show the statistical information getting through our experiment, and describe operational problems of 6to4.
