Abstract(in English) | This paper presents a novel computer aided diagnosis system for achieving efficient diagnosis of colorectal cancers using 3D abdominal CT images. Recently, virtual colonoscopy (VC) have got attention as a new colon diagnosis method. In colon diagnosis using VC, physicians make a diagnosis by fly-through freely inside the virtualized colon. However, it needs to change the viewpoints and the viewing directions many times because long and winding colon forms many folds. This is complex task for physicians. This paper proposes a new computer aided diagnosis system for the colon by seamlessly using virtual stretched (VS) views of the colon which enables physicians to observe large area of the colonic wall at a glance. This system provides VS views, virtual endoscopic (VE) views and CT slice views which are perfectly synchronized. VS views are obtained by controlling ray directions in volume rendering. Additionally, this system provides two functions, one for displaying polyp candidates which can help physicians to find colonic polyps easily, and the other for understanding lesion shapes when observing lesion areas. The system uses a joystick as an input device to perform intuitive operations. We have applied the developed system to abdominal CT images. The experimental results showed that the developed system could generate VS views to observe colon regions quite satisfactorily and effectively. |
