Abstract(in English) Recently, several attempts to investigate the relationship between facial skeleton and temporomandibular joint morphology, occulusal condition and the characteristics of mandibular movement have been made. As for temporomandibular disorder and jaw deformity, 3D understanding of mandibular structure and movement is generally important in diagnosis. However, traditional techniques do not allow total evaluation of jaw structure and movement as 3D information. In this study, we introduce a new method for four-dimensional(4D) display system of mandibular structure (3D) and movement(+1D). Jaw and teeth structure model are exactly constructed using 3D data from 3D-CT and 3D-LS (non-contact 3-D laser scanner), respectively. 6DOF jaw trajectory measured by a motion tracker (TRI-MET) is given to the structural model. Integration of the structure model and jaw movement is performed using reference spheres attached to the jaw and teeth. We also propose an automatic extraction and position detection of spheres in 3D data for integration in high accuracy. This method was employed to perform dynamical simulation of the mandibular function for patients with jaw deformities on a computer. By this system, we can visualize invisible inner movement of jaw using 3D image processing techniques.
