Abstract(in English) The aim of our study is a computer literacy education support for mentally retarded children who cannot use Japanese character and language. The perfect multimedia technology has to include all visual and auditory sense assistance that is needed for all handicapped person. This paper proposes the new concept of a common multimedia language that is composed of same meaning sound, picture and text information. We have developed an electronic mailsystem using the vision symbol called PIC (Pictogram Ideogram Communication) intelligible for a small child as information media. The system was used for mentally retarded children in the computer science education class. From the result of the evaluation experiment, we confirmed that some children were able to use the electronic mail using the proposed system.
