Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper proposes a pen-based PDA (Personal Digital Assistance) system for visually impaired persons. As one of the computer support method for the blind users, we have already developed an on-line Japanese character recognition algorithm on the desktop PC for them (particularly persons with acquired blindness). The blind novice user of this system is able to directly input Japanese characters using a stylus pen, without well training. However, opportunity to use a computer in various situations is increasing between handicapped persons recently. Therefore, we apply this on-line character recognition algorithm to the E-mail system on the PDA as a ubiquitous computing device. All command operation such as sending, receiving and managing electronic mail operation is executed by one scroll button and two additional buttons on the PDA. For the evaluation examination, a prototype system is developed including the on-line pen input function, a text editor and an E-mail application. We found that there are many input character mistakes when the user is not experienced in pen input operation. However, immediately, the blind user was able to make the sentence of E-mail and was able to send the text using our PDA system. We confirmed our proposed pen-based PDA system provides easy input method for the novice blind user.
