Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Scanning communication systems have the disadvantage of poor input efficiency. In this report, we propose a fast input method called "pairwise scanning." The system has two cursors moving synchronously on the character matrix. Multiple cursors accelerate the character selection but at the same time cause ambiguity in the selection. This is solved by the n-gram model of characters, with which the system determines the optimal sequence. If the result contains a wrong character, the system switches to the correction mode. For the cursor layout, we investigate two schemes, namely, "equi-spaced layout" and "adjoining layout." Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed input method increases the input efficiency by 29.58% compared with the conventional scanning method. We perform simulations to compare the input time of the proposed system with that of the conventional system using actual text. Consequently, the "adjoining layout" is shown to be superior, improving the input efficiency by 19.22%. In addition, the superiority of proposed method is confirmed by input time measurements.
