Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In every day life, various expressions associated with voice quality are frequently used, such as "high-pitched," "youthful," and "calm." We have already reported nine voice quality expressions in Japanese which were extracted out of more than 200 expressions as statistically significant. In this paper, we report significant acoustic correlates of each of the voice quality expressions which were measured through perceptual experiments for speech samples uttered by 84 talkers, especially focusing on the sound pressure level (SPL) of the utterance. For "hoarse" quality, for instance, spectral tilt and amount of aperiodic components in the long vowel segment [aa] of the utterance resulted in significant acoustic correlates, which is considered to be quite reasonable. The SPL has proved to be a significant acoustic parameter in many expressions. This fact suggests that the SPL plays an important role in the auditory perception of the speech utterance and thus should be adequately controlled in the recording and perceptual experiment.
