Abstract(in English) A joint research project on real-time VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) called GALAXY is being conducted by NTT Laboratories, Communications Research Laboratory (CRL), National Astronomical Observatory (NAO), Yamaguchi University and Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science (ISAS) to explore the effectiveness of ultra-high-speed communications technologies to advanced scientific research. The VLBI technology provides us very precise measurement tools for astronomy and earth science by processing the radio signals from the same radio source received by a number of distantly located antennas. By raising the data rates of the radio signals utilizing the capacity of ultra-high-speed network, the performance of the whole observation system can be greatly improved. This paper reports the outline of the project together with the recent development of our research activities.
