Real-time Measurement of Available Bandwidth

Abstract(in English) Bandwidth estimation along a network path have been a focus of constant attention. Above all estimating available bandwidth is crucially important for end-to-end admission control , rate control, and managing network resources. However, existing techniques use many probing packets to perform the estimation. In fact, these use significant amount of network bandwidth and would be too slow to become practical for some control methods. We present a available bandwidth estimation method DPDC (Detection of Packet-delay Correlation) and demonstrate the advantages of the method. Our simulation results show that DPDC estimates the available bandwidth efficiently by reducing the impact of the statistical variation of cross-traffic volume and the error of measurement. Furthermore, we implemented DPDC in a tool called Linear. Linear is network-friendly: does not impose an excessive load on a network and measures end-to-end available bandwidth in real-time. We finally verify the performance comparing to current estimation method.
