Estimating the Quality of Real-time Application by Using Network Performance Metrics

Abstract(in English) With increasing demands of the real-time application services over the IP network, the techniques for the management of the application quality are needed. To establish the techniques, it is necessary to estimate users' subjective quality for the application by using the network performance metrics. In the IP telephony service, the packet loss has been identified as the factor that affects the listening quality at a lot of past studies. Therefore it is possible to estimate the listening quality by using the network performance metrics like as the packet loss. On the other hand, the characteristic of the packet loss is various, and there is a report that the burst loss gave a lower listening quality than the random loss. However, the relation between the burst loss and the listening quality has not been clarified yet. Therefore we propose the new network performance metrics depending on the characteristic of burst loss, and propose the measurement method of the characteristic of burst loss.
