Scattered Pilot OFDM Reception Employing Turbo Interference Cancellation for ICI Caused by Fast Fading Fluctuations

Abstract(in English) In fast varying fading environments of mobile communications, OFDM signal transmissions suffer from severe degradation due to Inter Carrier Interference (ICI), because the Doppler shift destroys orthogonality between each subcarrier. To alleviate such ICI, this report proposes a scattered-pilot-OFDM reception scheme with turbo ICI cancellation. The proposed receiver consists of (i) a coherent detection unit, (ii) a turbo ICI cancellation unit, and (iii) a decoder of a channel code. Initially, the receiver performs a coherent detection mode by the combination of (i) and (ii). When a decision error is detected, it shifts from the coherent detection mode to a turbo ICI cancellation mode that carries out both the cancellation of ICI and the channel estimation by using the decoder output, that is, the Log Likelihood Ratio (LLR). Iterating the channel estimation, the interference cancellation, and the decoding, can achieve an excellent ICI cancellation performance. Computer simulations following the mobile reception in Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting demonstrate that the proposed receiver can effectively cancel ICI due to the fast varying fading, and that it is much superior to the coherent detection in the average BER performance.
