Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Three-dimensional computer graphics (3D CG) has been commonly used in broadcasting recently. In "live" HDTV broadcasting, however, not so many systems can manipulate complex 3D CG characters in real time. We have developed the 3D CG character system called "KIRARI" system that works successfully with live HDTV broadcasting and used it for many programs, striving to extend its functions. This paper introduces the development background; system architecture; and improvements and functional extensions such as recent improvement of the graphic work station, 2 sets of the motion capture system, and expansion of the capture area (addition of a transmitter for area expansion). These functions allow the systems to operate efficiently and reliably. Following recent case examples are also presented in this paper: conversation between two characters and the system operaion in the commemoration program for starting terrestrial digital broadcasting, "New Era of Digital TV."
