Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) History of the optical fiber development is reviewed. Study on the manufacturing process for silica glass fibers started in 1970, resulting in several industrial methods including VAD, OVD, and MCVD processes. In mid 1980's, the first national-wide trunk network completed in Japan, by using singlemode fiber at 1300nm. Also transpacific submarine cable TPC3 followed it very immediately. Around 1990, dispersion shifted fibers enabled the 1550nm transmission systems with longer repeater spacing and higher bit rate. The WDM technology in late 1990's was a revolutionary breakthrough towards the large capacity transmission system. For WDM systems, new fibers, such as non-zero dispersion shifted fiber, dispersion managed fiber system, and dispersion compensation fiber were intensively developed. Towards the future photonic network, fiber technology is expected to make further progresses.
