Abstract(in English) | Since photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), that consist of silica cores and distributed air hole silica claddings, can produce interesting properties that are not obtained by conventional optical fibers, they are expected to the application for transmission fibers with high capacity and functional fibers. Fabricating fiber couplers using PCFs, realization of high functional fiber couplers can be expected. In this report, we show a design method of PCF couplers and numerical examples of coupler design, and describe PCF coupler fabrications using CO_2 laser irradiation. In PCF coupler design, elongation ratios for air hole pitches and diameters are calculated to obtain 50% of coupling ratio at 1550nm wavelength. In PCF coupler fabrications, it was found that we could control whether air holes in coupler taper region were remained or collapsed by changing irradiated laser power. It was confirmed that the deviation of air hole diameters was small enough in fabricated coupler taper with holey claddings. We also clarified characteristics of fabricated PCF couplers. |
