Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Future Optical packet switching will require all-optical flip-flops for optical packet memory, self-routing, and bit-length conversion. We have experimentally demonstrated an all-optical flip-flop using a multimode interference bistable laser diode (MMI-BLD). The flip-flop is based on bistable switching between two cross-coupled lasing modes through cross-gain saturation and saturable absorption. The optical flip-flop operation was achieved in the wavelength range of 1550 - 1565 nm, and the required power was around 0 dBm. The On/Off ration was more than 10 dB. The latching functions such as optical memory and pulse width conversion were successfully demonstrated using the MMI-BLD.
