Precise Measurement of Light Attenuation Coefficient of SI-POF at Short Distances

Abstract(in English) Precise measurement of the light attenuation in a plastic optical fiber was studied. Cut-back method was employed to measure the attenuation caused by every 1 meter of the fiber in a 11m-long fiber. The influence of fluctuations of the laser output power and the laser beam profile was minimized. As a result, the error due to the measuring system was made less than ±0.033%(0.0015dB/m) of the measured values. Error due to sample preparation was also alleviated by carefully polishing and applying an index matching oil to the end surfaces of the fiber. We were also successful in observing the precise fiber length for which an EMD condition was reached.
