Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Optical fiber grating couplers (FGCs), in which refractive index modulated gratings are written in the tapers of fused fiber couplers, are expected as optical add-drop multiplexers (OADMs) for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems because of their fast wavelength selectivity. Recently, all-optical FGC switches by controlling their wavelength characteristics using optical Kerr effect had been proposed, and it had been shown that the switching powers for FGC switches could be reduced compared with those for all-optical fiber coupler switches. In this paper, wavelength characteristics of π-phase-shifted FGCs were theoretically investigated for more reduction of switching power of the FGC switches, and offsets and an apodizations of the grating were found to be effective in practical use of the FGC switches. The possibility of the all-optical FGC switches were experimentally confirmed using a Ti-sapphire pulse laser as a high power pump.
