Active tuning of effective refractive index based on relative displacement of double-layered closed-ring resonator arrays

Abstract(in English) Metamaterials, which can show novel optical functionalities beyond conventional optics, has been actively studied in recent years. As one of approaches to add tunability on resonant characteristics of metamaterials, slightly shifting relative position of stacked metamaterials or metasurfaces has been reported. We have verified that the tunable modulation of the effective refractive index based on double-layered closed-ring resonator arrays is possible by changing the relative position of them. It is numerically shown that the effective refractive index can be widely modulated; from positive to negative, from negative to positive, from near zero to positive or negative values. Our approach could be used to develop new types of optical elements.
