Development of Three-Dimensional Imaging Method of Magnetic Nanoparticles

Abstract(in English) Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) has been extensively studied for in-vivo biomedical diagnosis. We have been developing an MPI system using multiple pickup coils and weak gradient field, which is capable of imaging three-dimensional distribution of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP). In the experiment, we performed the three-dimensional MPI experiment of two samples containing different amounts (10 μg, 20 μg) of magnetic nanoparticles. The number of pickup coils was increased to 10. An excitation field with strength of 1.6 mT at 3 kHz and a DC gradient field with a small field gradient of 0.13 T/m were used. A third harmonic signal generated from the MNP samples was detected with ten pickup coils, and the samples were two-dimensionally scanned to obtain field maps. Then, the field maps were analyzed using the nonnegative least square method to reconstruct a three-dimensional distribution image. We successfully estimated the three-dimensional positions of the two MNP samples with better accuracy and less artifacts, compared to our previous case using five pickup coils.
