Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Navon (1977) demonstrated the precedence of global processing over local processing, using compound patterns that consist of small letters forming a large letter. In actual monitoring works that require prolonged viewing, it is often reported that workers tend to lose global information, while they are sustainably able to attend to local information. This tendency may frequently cause human errors and accidents. Therefore, we invented a new performance test named “Compound Digit Cancellation Test (CDCT)”. In this test, a lot of compound digits that contain small digits constituting a large digit are printed on paper, and participants are asked to find and cancel the target digits that appear at the global or local level, as fast and accurately as possible, for 400 sec. The CDCT enables us to reveal personal characteristics concerning the dominance and speed of global and local processing, together with the efficiency of attentional shift between the both levels, by comparing the cancellation performances for global and local target digits. Also it has been found that the CDCT can be a useful training tool for adjusting individuals’ attentional bias to global or local level. |
