Analysis of Ultrasonic Propagation and Virtual Images in Air-coupled Ultrasonic Testing

Abstract(in English) A virtual image may be generated near the defect in defect measurement by aerial ultrasonic waves. The virtual image is caused by multiple reflections in the specimen and spreading of ultrasonic waves, which is due to the fluctuation in the amplitude due to the reception of the spread signal with a large probe. In the simulation, ultrasonic wave propagation was analyzed, three of the edge wave, the direct wave which passed near the defect part, and the ultrasonic wave which was multiply reflected under the defect and spread were received at different timings. Although we used a large focused ultrasonic probe for the receiving probe, we considered that it is appropriate to use a small receiving probe so that the amplitude fluctuation does not affect the virtual image. Ultrasonic measurement was actually performed with a probe whose receiving surface was made small, and virtual images could be reduced.
