Abstract(in English) | Autonomous mobility generates a huge amount of sensor information such as CAN data. Recently, there is a growing interest for collecting CAN data into cloud datacenters in order to realize advanced safe driving support and autonomous driving. Although the size of each CAN data is very small (<16 Byte), an autonomous mobility vehicle may generate more than 1,000 data packets per minute. Autonomous mobility vehicles send CAN data to cloud datacenters via mobile networks with limited capacity. Thus, it is necessary to compress the huge amount of short CAN data packets for efficiency. In this paper, we propose EdgeRE, a practical and efficient architecture of edge enhanced Redundancy Elimination (RE) for autonomous mobility. EdgeRE consists of two packet compression techniques. First, EdgeRE compresses CAN data transported through the mobile network by using packet caching (i.e., rabin fingerprinting). Second, EdgeRE compresses CAN data transported through the internet by using packet coding (i.e., gzip). To reduce the number of packets arriving at the cloud datacenters, EdgeRE packaged together individual CAN data packets at the edge server. As a result, during the on-road evaluation, 84% of CAN data packets was able to be compressed in real time. |
