Fabrication of Organic Photovoltaic Polarizer using Polymer Alignment Technology

Abstract(in English) An absorption-type polarizer is an inevitable optical component for liquid crystal displays (LCDs), but the light utilization efficiency is low because of a 50%-absorption nature against incident light to a LCD. To improve the light efficiency of the polarizer, we have tried to fabricate a polarizer that shows a photovoltaic nature utilizing with the absorbed polarization component. In this report, we first study the alignment control of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) using a rubbing or a photo-alignment method, in which P3HT is generally known as a p-type semiconductor with photosensitive properties. Finally, we demonstrate a photovoltaic polarizer showing anisotropic absorption properties using an organic p-n structure composed of a p-type alignment-controlled P3HT layer and an n-type Fullerene (C60) layer.
