Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Neurons in the inferior colliculus (IC) of the mustached bat have been shown to represent intensity difference between sounds from both ears. However, it remains unclear how IC neurons represent the binaural intensity difference (IID). To address this issue, we developed a neural network model of bat's auditory system for processing information of sound intensity. The model consists of the networks of the lateral superior olive (LSO), the dorsal nucleus of lateral lemniscus (DNLL), and the IC. IC neuron was modeled with the Leaky-Integrator neuron model. It receives an excitatory input from LSO neurons and an inhibitory input from DNLL neurons. We show that inhibition from DNLL to IC is responsible for the gain control by which an IID is represented by the same IC neuron, irrespective of different pairs of sound intensity. We also explore the mechanism by which temporal-varying IIDs are coded in IC neurons.?
