Numerical design of MQW with enhanced polarization-dependent phase shift for efficient Stokes-vector modulator

Abstract(in English) We propose to use InGaAsP three-step asymmetric coupled multiple quantum wells (MQWs) based phase shifter to obtain enhanced polarization-dependent refractive index modulation for Stokes-vector modulator application. First, we design the QW to obtain large polarization dependence and strong refractive index modulation by abnormal quantum-confined-stark-effect (QCSE). Then numerical analysis is carried out to confirm the efficiency of designed QW. We demonstrate that large polarization dependent refractive index change of 3.06×10-3 can be obtained under a reverse bias range from 1 V/μm to 3 V/μm, which is 5 times larger than conventional symmetric QW. The designed QW is promising to be used to realize an efficient and high-speed Stokes-vector modulator.
