Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, as an input method of assistive devices for persons with severe physical disabilities, eye-gaze input is getting popular. Present user-interface for eye-gaze input, “onscreen keyboard”, which still seems a simple application of conventional ones, is not necessarily designed by considering the characteristics of eye movement as well as visual recognition. Then this paper aimed at clarifying “the position and duration” and “the relative position from the position of target key” of eye gaze, as a basic research for the interface design suited to eye-gaze input. We used two different shapes such as circle and square as key shape and categorized eye gaze into 3 different types,“short fixation”, “long fixation” and “character entry”, according to its duration. Then the incidence of each category was computed. Empirical results revealed that long fixation and character entry were observed at the target key and its surrounding keys, while short fixation was observed in a wide range of portions on the key board. In case of circular key, long fixation and character entry tended to occur in a relatively small region surrounding the target key.
