Abstract(in English) | Because of its high throughput potentiality on short-range communications as well as inherent superiority of high precision on ranging and localization, ultra-wideband (UWB) technology has been attracting attentions continuously in both academic researches and industrial deployment. The first domestic UWB regulation in Japan was issued in 2006 after various basic studies as well as field tests from 2002. Since then, the Ministry of Inner Affairs and Communications (MIC) has been revising the UWB regulation in conjunction with the penetration of UWB systems, emerging new trends of industrial demands on UWB as well as coexistence evaluation with other wireless systems. However, the current domestic UWB regulation only allows UWB systems to operate in indoor environments, which doesn’t meet the increasing demands on outdoor UWB utilization. In responding to the new social needs, MIC is taking steps towards enabling outdoor UWB. As another trend, the IEEE 802 standardization committee has developed several UWB standards in responding to industrial demands. In this report, we present a brief review on the transition of domestic UWB regulation. Then, we give a quick glance at the published IEEE 802 standards related to UWB up to now. Furthermore, we shed some light on the ongoing works and recent trends in domestic UWB regulation as well as UWB standardization activities within IEEE 802. |
