Analysis of Arc Length Just before Arc Extinction Generated in a 500VDC/10A Resistive Circuit by Means of Observation from Two Directions

Abstract(in English) The experimental circuit is the resistive load resistor with supply voltage of 500 VDC/10A, and the material contacts is pure silver. The break arc is stretched upward by the permanent magnet. This behavior is observed simultaneously with the high-speed cameras from two directions, and the arc length at extinction is analyzed from the obtained images. The arc length just before arc extinction measured only from the front camera is defined as planar arc length. On the other hand, the arc length just before arc extinction analyzed from the front and top cameras is defined as three-dimensional arc length. As a result, the three-dimensional arc length is clearly larger than the planar arc length at high supply voltage. The reason is that as the supply voltage increase, the arc spot tend to move to the back of the contacts in the images taken by the front camera.
