Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Visual prothesis is a medical device that restores lost visual function by electrical stimulation to the visual nervous system via implanted metal electrodes. Excessive and chronic stimulation causes damage to the surrounding tissue and to the electrodes. In this study, we evaluated the effect of stimulation current on the electrochemical characteristics of the electrodes implanted in a living body. We implanted a porous electrode array in a rabbit’s eyeball, and evaluated electrochemical impedance of active and inactive electrodes over a month. The electrochemical characteristics of the electrodes differed between active and inactive electrode. Increase of solution resistances of the inactive electrode was observed over 3 weeks after implantation. It was considered to be caused by capsulation due to foreign-body reaction. On the other hand, the similar change was not observed in the active electrode. It might be owing to desorption of adsorbed protein from the surface of the electrode by the stimulation current.
