Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Inspired by the spike-based signaling between neurons, we introduce impulse-based signaling for wireless communication, and show how robustness to errors can be achieved. The scheme is able to separate mixtures of spike-based messages by employing pattern recognizers that are dynamically sensitive to spike-based messages satisfying specific conditions. As a result, the scheme is extremely robust to collisions of messages. Furthermore, the time required to get a message through from one node to another decreases by one to two orders of magnitude, as compared to spike-based ALOHA-inspired schemes, even when there are many nodes that simultaneously broadcast their impulse-based messages. Key to achieving this performance is the formulation of a new type of finite automaton that can recognize spiking patterns over time. We discuss these so-called "spike automata", and show how they can be used in the decoding of individual messages from a mixture of messages.
