Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Working memory (WM) is a neural storage system which retains information temporarily. Some studies have claimed that WM is realized by using time-locked spatiotemporal firing patterns (polychronous neuronal groups: PNGs). In addition, a number of experiments have shown that performance of WM tasks was correlated with alpha power in electroencephalogram. Recent numerical studies also demonstrated that phase difference of alpha-band activity between them two neuronal groups modulate information transmission efficiency between them. However, it has not been clarified how the phase difference of alpha-band activity between the neuronal groups affects formation of PNGs. In this study, we introduced a spiking neural network model composed of two mutually connected groups modulated by external alpha-band oscillatory input with phase difference in order to investigate how the phase difference of alpha oscillation modulates the PNG formation. We found that small but non-zero phase difference between the groups facilitated the formation of PNGs which span two groups in comparison with the case with no phase difference. This result indicates the phase difference of oscillatory inputs may control PNG formation. Further studies are needed in order to investigate the effect of the phase difference on the performance of WM tasks.
