| Abstract(in English) | How do we interact with “things” via language? This paper extends Naya and Ishida’s (2018) analysis and focuses on the language use on “things” such as map display, signboards, and traffic signs. Based on Hirose’s (1995, 1997, 2000, et seq.) hypothesis concerning the difference in basic egocentricity between English and Japanese, we propose that the expressions whereby we interact with things reveal that English is a public-self-centered language that prefers public expressions by default whereas Japanese is a private-self-centered language that prefers private expressions by default. We also argue that signboards with private expressions in Japanese have an efficient way of providing information. |
