Miniaturization of Harmonic Impedance Transformer and its Application to Class-F Amplifiers

Abstract(in English) A new method of miniaturizing the quarter-wavelength ($lambda$/4) harmonic impedance (Z) transformer in a class-F amplifier is presented. The proposed Z-transformer, consisting of a short microstrip line (< $lambda$/4), a shunt inductance and series capacitance, is equivalent to conventional $lambda$/4 Z-transformer in that it transforms the RF-shorts at the 2nd and 3rd harmonics to a short and an open at the respective harmonic frequencies. Furthermore, it provides a DC-bias feed path along the shunt inductor, eliminating the need to use additional DC biasing circuit and thus reducing the footprint of the whole amplifier circuit. We also conducted a theoretical trade-off design analysis, considering various limitations faced when implementing the proposed circuit to practical amplifiers. By combining the optimized Z-transformer and a compact CRLH transmission line stub (for harmonic shorts), we fabricated a 2-GHz GaN HEMT class-F power amplifier with good performance of 40.6 dBm output power and 74.6% power-added efficiency.
