2 to 5-LP mode amplification characteristics of ring core EDF

Abstract(in English) Several mode-division-multiplexing transmission experiments employing a few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier (FM-EDFA) have been considered for high-capacity transmission systems utilizing space division multiplexing technologies. One of the important challenges in realizing a practical transmission system is the differential modal gain (DMG) of the FM-EDFA. To improve the DMG, an FM-EDFA that employed a ring-core erbium-doped fiber (RC-EDF) was proposed. It was confirmed, both theoretically and experimentally, that 2-LP (LP01, LP11) mode signal amplification with a low DMG was achieved. In recently, a further increase in the mode multiplexing number was explored for increasing the transmission capacity. In this report, we report the possibility of an RC-EDF as a 2 to 5-LP mode amplification medium by WDM signal amplification simulation.
