Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The digital divide of the elderly generally refers to the elderly’s inability to keep pace with technology in our information society, and as a result they are left behind and in effect walled off from society. Vast amounts of information has become available online and this information is assumed to be important for all member of society. This paper will examine the fact that younger people are also alienated from the elderly as a result of the digital divide. First, this paper will analyze and classify the conditions under which the digital divide occurs. Second, it will discuss the results of a survey from 2016 regarding the image that Japanese, Korean, Singaporean, and Thai university students have of the elderly. The survey results make clear that students have stereotypical views of the elderly that do not fully capture the diverse lifestyles of the elderly. It means that younger people limit their possibilities for when they themselves become elderly. And therefore, it becomes harder to obtain the knowledge and information necessary for younger people to enjoy a smooth process of aging as they grow old. Lastly, the survey revealed ways to break stereotypes about the elderly. Students with experience caring for or living with elderly held different views than those without such experiences. However, without such first-hand experience with the elderly, it is difficult for people to break their stereotypes of the elderly and it is problematic that the stereotypes can not be broken solely through online sources.
